Lomography in New Orleans

I set out to capture the magic of New Orleans, Louisiana. Armed with a backpack full of Lomography cameras, I had only one day to set out what I intended to do. This city is very dear to me and I really wanted to capture the essence of the people, food, and culture that make up this city. As they say in NOLA, "Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler"!

Walking through the French Quarter can be sensory overload. The sounds swept me off my feet! Get ready to dance through the streets to the tunes of live jazz and zydeco music. Go hungry and prepare to feast like a king! In NOLA, you can have your cake and eat it too! Try a little bit of everything-- Cafe Du Monde beignets, Dickie Brennan's bananas foster, or an old-fashioned hamburger from Port-of-Call. Here's series of an amazing transformation! Watch as this door starts off from a dull piece of wood to a beautiful Spanish-esque like antique door. All the chisels, Spanish nails, and stains were hand done by Ted Cheavens. He takes his time and pays attention to every detail!! What an excellent designer he is!!!

I was asked by a friend to shoot some photos of a killer house party. Let me tell you, these folks can throw quite the party! They had bands, a fire, a bar, and lots of good food. I'm glad I was invited to take my camera and shoot the night. It was nice to shoot such a fun, laid back crowd for a change!

lately, i've been experimenting with sequence photos. here is a sample of some of my works. basically, it looks like a long panorama photo that is divided into parts but it's not. it's different photos from different points in time and some in different cities that tell one idea or thought. so basically, each photo can stand alone but together, they cohesively dance to build an image.

Pedro & April were two of the most genuine, wholesome, and beautiful people that I have ever met. I enjoyed this wedding so much that I stuck around for an extra hour just cause I couldn't get enough! I got tons of great pics, smiles, and love!!! April definitely brought the showers. It was storming out, during her bridals but her smile brought the flowers. She was bursting with life, big smiles, and tons of excitement. She was super excited to take her lovely modern photos at the beautiful Hotel Valencia in downtown San Antonio. April had her beautiful entourage of woman with her. It was a fun photo shoot with lots of cool folks! Can't wait for her wedding next month!

Despite the oddly freezing temperature, Broke Beads brought the warm vibes. Strangely, when they played Sunshine Baby- the sun started peeking through the clouds. Someone up there, likes their tunes- always a good sign

Meet- We are the World- seen at Guero's for SXSW

I really don't know where to start. They kinda give you the same impression of when you first saw Lady Gaga. You don't know what to think but you like it. Yes, they all have mask on and they dance in sheets while wrapped up in this shiny black material. I sat right in front of the stage in awe. I kept looking at the girl next to me in disbelief. She too had this crazy giddy grin across her face, as she taped the whole performance on her iphone. I'm pretty sure they are like nothing else at SXSW. I wish I would have seen them fully perform. I only caught a song and 1/2.

I recently read an article about an iPhone app called Brushes. It's an app that allows you to freely paint on your phone. Simple. Yes. Brushes is now a firestorm. Little digital galleries are popping up everywhere featuring "paintings" done on brushes. Completely, enlightened by brushes I realized something. Sometimes you don't need the paint from the most high dollar store in town to create. In my case, I often catch myself only wanting to shoot film with my big mack daddy camera. Without realizing that photography comes from any single pixel, negative, exposure, or shutter. I thought I would experiment with my camera phone of all things. It's a camera, too, so why not? Forge forward little camera phone, you can do it!

Landscape Paintings

Painting landscapes- the first thought that came to my mind ...ugggh so overdone.
But then I thought how natural the earth is and how one day it may not look the way I remembered it looking. All of sudden it was enticing to paint my nostalgic vision of how I always imagined the swamp lands. I'm originally from a small town in Louisiana. As I walked through the grass, I inhaled, exhaled, felt the earth and knew it was changing. Then I seemed concerned that this imagery was a reflection of who I was, the memories I had, the simpler times of riding bikes, running in fields of flowers, & pulling up lily pads. I never saw myself as a landscape artist but I couldn't escape the idea that many of our swamplands are disappearing yearly. The way I envisioned Louisiana could one day be gone. Painting this idea was too tempting, so I started painting, before it started to daunt me. This is where I'm at thus far and I will keep going.

Banksy New Orleans Louisiana

For those who aren't aware- is a pretty bad ass graffiti artist. He's the art worlds most covenant secret, no one knows who this British chap is for sure. The places he tags are to make a statement in the political, religious, or worldly affairs.
For those who are aware- so he came to New Orleans for the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and to challenge the Grey Ghost. The grey ghost has been a resident in New Orleans that paints over any graffiti with grey paint. Let the roller brush sparring begin!

Jonathan and I were in NOLA for a conference. With opportunist written all over our faces, we went hunt down any remaining Banksy's. We found 3 more.

the last one isn't NOLA it's from London. Found it walking to Camden Market. Where I also found a charming owl necklace, score! It was taken with a LOMO action sampler on 35mm film.

This picture was taken in my first undergraduate photography class. I had a manual Canon AE-1 and spent many of hours dodging and burning in the dark room to get this photo. Living in a digital world, it may be hard to keep sight of why photography is an art. This photo hangs at my desk to remind me of the art in photography. I bought the film, learned the mechanics of my camera, and then headed to the darkroom. Darkrooms are serious business for beginners. It gets easier but initially it's a dim red battlefield. Through everything, the reward is the great. The hours, the faulty enlargers, the stinky chemicals, and the expensive paper, oh the expensive paper, made photography a true art form. Photography is beautiful! A lot of love goes into this field!

Who knew Warhol's Marilyn Monroe portrait was so small but on a large canvas? It's a little bigger than my hand.
Who knew that Monet's water lily's were so big?
Pollock enjoyed putting keys, nails, bolts, screws, etc... in some of his works. There I stand in front of Pollock, complete fazed & crossed and in love.

Tim Burton MOMA

On a recent trip to New York, I was lucky enough to visit the MOMA which was currently hosting an exhibit featuring Tim Burton. Burton, thought up Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Nightmare before Christmas etc. ect. ect..... He continues to fascinate anyone with an ounce of imagination. Let's talk about Tim Burton. His life is like one big oxymoron- creepy, twisted, strange but yet enchanting, loving, and a gentle romantic. Often many of his characters have this outcast-ish, reclusive way about them. Buried underneath all their creepy,weirdo ways is this loving caring heart you long for- a reflection of Burton himself. I loved going to visit this exhibit. It was purely outlandishly genius- equip with black light rooms, mechanical sculptures, drawings, movie costumes, movie rough drafts, and paintings. If your around NYC stop in, you'll be delighted.

I decided to spend some time with people who are deemed poor, in order to learn each person's plight. These are people that have homes, families, and jobs but life is a struggle for them. Their struggle is clearly evident from the wrinkles on their face, the dingy clothes that they wear, and the frown-like shape that their eyes make. Life has not been easy on them but they live each day with endurance and confidence that they are making it day by day, step by step. Each person's endurance reigned as I spoke to them. No one had distress on their minds. Many were delighted that I even stopped to speak to them. I talked to Sheila who had dreamed of visiting Europe. She and I walked along Chimes St. and shared stories of wishful thinking. I told her about my wishes in life but only because I wanted to contribute to our conversation, when deep down inside of me, I wished life cold have been easier on Sheila.

I spoke to Leroy, an elderly black gentleman, who loved his wife but liked to joke about leaving her. Leroy had a great sense of humor and was in high spirits. As I walked away from him, I immediately felt as if my day has been better just by talking to him. He left me with feeling of joy and I left him with a smile from ear to ear.

Then there was the group of four laughing sisters and five kids who lived in a two bedroom house. There were so flattered by the idea of having their picture taken. They shared with me how they spent much of their free time playing Uno. We talked about movies and enjoyed simple chit chat about Sunday afternoons.

These are the people that I saw through my car window, along sidewalks, or during my daily routine. For many people, these are the faces that vanish with each passing thought. However, these poor faces all have a voice that should be heard. Those voices speak humble and modest words, words that are heartfelt and are left to be admired. They are admired because although they are poor and are constantly struggling, they make themselves no different that anyone else. There was so much life in each of these people regardless of how they are viewed.

Owl Snap jumped on a plane and was headed to Virginia. To shoot a real country styled Virginia wedding in the small town of Woodstock. In the most playful photojournalistic way of shooting I found myself learning a ton of Belizian names, the language of Creole, and what James Brown meant when he said "Get on up"!
